Dana Zimmer and Jenna Irwin say officers didn't believe they were Deaf during traffic stops

Two young members of Winnipeg's Deaf community say they have faced disrespect or ignorance from local police. Dana Zimmer and Jenna Irwin said officers have thought they are lying about being Deaf during traffic stops. Both women feel discriminated against because of a language barrier and Irwin feels police do not want to make the effort to communicate with her appropriately. Find out what Winnipeg Police have to say about the situation by reading the full article below.

10-suite housing project designed specifically for Deaf-Blind individuals

ECCOE and Resource Centre for Manitobans who are Deaf-Blind Executive Director, Bonnie Heath, heading project

Many Deaf-Blind individuals feel unsafe and isolated in their homes. This project aims to provide the Deaf-Blind community with housing that is accessible, safe, and affordable. Winnipeg-architect Steve Cohlmeyer, who designed The Forks, will create tactical and high-constrast living spaces to help individuals differienciate between rooms.

The project will be the first of its kind in the city and province. It's slated to be located at River Avenue and Osborne Street as part of the new Gas Station Arts Centre.
